The new IS, on sale at the end of the year, is the second Lexus production car to embody the L-finesse design philosophy that created the striking new GS. The IS radiates dynamic visual appeal, with its powerful sweeping profile, the clean, confident lines of the bonnet and its broad, purposeful stance. And like the GS, its design expresses purity of purpose and new levels of sophistication.
The IS also marks the introduction of the first Lexus diesel engine. This 2.2-litre common-rail unit combines exceptionally quiet and smooth operating characteristics with high levels of torque and power, generating 130kW (177bhp) at 3,600rpm and 400Nm (295lb ft) of torque between 2,000 and 2,400rpm. That takes the IS 220d from 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in 8.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 217km/h (135mph), yet it returns 6.3l/100km in the combined cycle.
The new IS 220d also uses Lexus 'clean' diesel technology, incorporating an advanced and remarkably efficient common-rail injection system. Another important feature is a highly advanced Diesel Particulate Nox Reduction (DPNR) catalyst that reduces harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) gases, particulate matter, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide (CO) at the same time. Consequently, the IS 220d comfortably exceeds the rigorous Euro IV emissions standards.
The IS will also be available with a spirited and refined 2.5-litre V6 petrol engine.
The new IS diesel also features the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system to further enhance safety and the smoothness of the Lexus diesel experience. The petrol model offers the Pre-Crash Safety (PCS) system which works with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). They also have dual knee airbags and the world's first twin-chamber passenger airbag which spreads – and greatly reduces, compared with a conventional airbag – the force of the passenger's impact with the bag across the shoulders, upper chest, face and neck.
Also unique is the remarkable Multimedia and Navigation option, a system that opens up a new world of mobile media. It allows extensive voice control over audio, climate control and phone systems as well as the latest-generation navigation system. You can also can create a true digital home cinema experience through the car's wide-screen Electro Multi-Vision display (EMV) and 14-speaker 300W Mark Levinson® 5.1 Surround Sound. In addition, the package includes the Parking Assist Monitor and full Bluetooth® connectivity.
