Plan a night at the Vienna State Opera, and benefit from the role Lexus has taken on at this world famous venue. Those who drive a Lexus really understand something about excellence. And whilst automobile engineering and staging world-class opera's require very different talents, the emotional commitment to perfection is the same. Therefore a partnership with the Vienna State Opera is a natural step for Lexus.
In 2005 Lexus will continue supporting operas and other projects at the Vienna State Opera. In addition Lexus will also support the day-to-day running of the Vienna State Opera's youth opera and ballet schools.
The two premieres sponsored by Lexus are 'Werther' from Jules Massenet on February 19 and 'Manon Lescaut' from Giacomo Puccini. With the exception of the spectacular Opera Ball, performances take place every night through to June.
The opera school offers children the chance to study music and opera alongside their regular school studies. Other theatrical skills and subjects are also taught. The roots of the ballet school go back to 1771 when Jean Georges Noverre founded the "Theatrical Dance School". Today young boys and girls can study classical ballet in a school close to the main opera building.
Although Vienna's operatic tradition goes back as far as the early 17th century, at first no theatre focused exclusively on this art form. In the early 19th century most opera performances took place in the 'Kärnthnertortheater', but it became too small for the big casts used in romantic operas. Emperor Franz Joseph I inaugurated the Vienna State Opera in 1869 to rectify this shortcoming, although somewhat surprisingly, he was not too fond of its architecture.
