The New Challenge for “F”

The movie

The RC F was developed with real motorsports participation in mind. A two-door coupe body was chosen for the RC F instead of a four-door sedan body like the IS F to comply with the FIA-GT3 entry requirements mandating a “production two-door coupe”. Using an RC F as a base, the RC F GT500 competes in Japan’s domestic top tier Super GT racing series; while the RC F GT3 battles rivals all over the globe.
We participate in motorsports to create ever-better cars and to “deliver surprises and emotions beyond customer expectations”.

LFA

Through TAKUMI craftsmanship of many fields, the LFA is a 21st century sports car that stimulates the senses and transports the driver to an extraordinary world.

4.8 L V10 Engine

The development team installed a race spec V10 engine into the LFA using experience gained from Germany’s Nurburgring 24-hour race. This engine has set new standards with its lightweight compact size and performance. The exclusive 1LR-GUE engine uses a wide, 72-degree V angle design for maximum efficiency. The engine incorporates special lightweight materials for the titanium valves, connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, and diamond-like carbon coated rocker arms.

Dramatic Sound

The engine intake and exhaust notes are carefully channeled into the LFA cabin. The main channel connects the surge tank to the inside cabin and exit under the main dash panel. While two additional channels exit near the upper cowl opening and the lower reflector. These channels produce a 3D, concert hall-like audio performance for the driver.

6-speed Automated Sequential Gearbox

The T6-speed ASG (Automated Sequential Gearbox) powers the rear wheels through a torque sensing limited-slip differential. The transaxle construction and rear axle design contributes to ideal vehicle weight distribution. This transmission uses the latest technology such as micron level gear machining to improve shift precision and minimize gear noise. Seven different shift speeds can be selected to change the driving experience. Shift time is a mere 200 milliseconds. Speed based throttle blipping ensures efficient vehicle control during downshifts.

Carbon Ceramic Brake Discs

390 mm (15.4 inch) diameter front brake discs use 6-piston aluminum monoblock calipers, while 360 mm (14.2 inch) rear brake discs use 4-piston aluminum monoblock calipers. Lexus high friction brake pads are used to achieve high braking performance regardless of brake temperature. Cooling efficiency is improved by 20% through the use of full floating discs that suppress disc warping under high temperatures.

Carbon Fiber Chassis

According to LFA Chief Engineer Haruhiko Tanahashi, the basic goal with this vehicle was to minimize overall weight. The team made a huge decision early in the development stages to achieve this: replacing the aluminum body construction with a monocoque cabin utilizing the latest carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) technology to allow for a 100 kg reduction in weight.

Power Balance

The ideal weight distribution for a high-performance supercar is 50:50. This is a common perception, but the perfect weight ratio is the ratio at which the vehicle can demonstrate its full potential. With this in mind, the LFA development team targeted a 48:52 weight distribution.

Double Wishbone Front Suspension

The high performance double wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension achieve precise steering and chassis feedback to the driver, excellent balance at the limits, outstanding grip and high-speed stability. The dampers were specially developed to maintain proper dampening during straight line and cornering situations. Piston rods coated with diamond-like carbon composite material and nickel silicone plated cylinder walls minimize friction resistance and produce excellent response. The damper remote reservoir cylinders have elastic metal bellows connected to the main cylinder through the base valve.

Multi-link Rear Suspension

A hollow anti-roll bar that reduces unsprung weight is matched to lightweight forged aluminum knuckles and suspension arms. Born from experiences at the Nürburgring 24-hour race, the LFA uses cross bracing along the bottom of the chassis for a high-rigidity platform capable of extreme G force. The front and rear cross bracing connects via a grid style central brace. This bracing is reinforced by CFRP performance struts at the front of the chassis and an aluminum delta brace.

GS F

Through TAKUMI craftsmanship of many fields, the LFA is a 21st century sports car that stimulates the senses and transports the driver to an extraordinary world.

5.0 L V8 Engine

The high performance 2UR-GSE engine produces 351 kW (477 PS) through the use of a high-spec D-4S direct fuel injection system and optimized intake/exhaust VVT-iE valve control. Limitless acceleration feeling and excellent rev response that can only come from naturally aspirated engines highlight the V8’s best characteristics. Pressing the accelerator instantly breaks the calm atmosphere with a surprising amount of torque creating an immensely gratifying experience.

Lightweight Highly Rigid Body

To create a stiff frame capable of handling repeated cornering at high limits, multiple advanced engineering technologies were used. In addition to laser welding and increased spot welding, the new body features a structural adhesive added to the adjoining panels that enhances rigidity and damping characteristics. Fine pitch laser screw welding prevents cross-sectional deformation, and high rigidity glass adhesive that increases cohesion between the glass and body are utilized. Improved front and rear body braces plus additional attachment points to the body further improve structural rigidity so the body can handle hard circuit use.

GS F Exclusive Tuned Suspension

The suspension geometry has been improved with newly engineered parts making high suspension rigidity and optimized roll rigidity a reality. The steering system also offers better response. Tuning and long-distance endurance testing were performed at tracks all around the world.

Brakes

The GS F uses 6-piston aluminum monoblock calipers in the front; and 4-piston aluminum monoblock calipers in the rear. High friction brake pads* offer high rigidity and fade resistance. A larger brake master cylinder and optimized pedal ratio results in a responsive and linear feeling. Hard braking during corner entry and vehicle distance adjustment are now easily performed. “F” exclusive orange brake calipers (front/rear) are available as factory options.
* Vehicle speed, braking force and surrounding conditions (such as temperature or humidity) may cause brake noise or cause the brake pads to stick due to rust.

Aerodynamics

The GS F uses efficient aerodynamics to direct air from the front of the vehicle to flow under the vehicle and smoothly exit below the rear bumper. A flat engine under cover and the angle of the rear floor under cover are both optimized to create ideal air flow. Each under cover has aero stabilizing fins that use airflow to produce excellent handling stability. The lower lip of the front grille and rear spoiler are made of carbon. By lightening and strengthening the aero parts, the vehicle can create a high level of downforce and control airflow with the entire body.

RC F

Through TAKUMI craftsmanship of many fields, the LFA is a 21st century sports car that stimulates the senses and transports the driver to an extraordinary world.

5.0 L V8 Engine

The powertrain uses a new 5.0 L V8 engine featuring D-4S fuel injection. Taking the 2UR-GSE engine as a base, which is found in the IS F, newly developed parts are created including titanium valves, forged connecting rods and a new cylinder head. The exhaust system has also been improved for more power output. While maintaining overwhelming power performance, the use of the Atkinson's cycle engine design improves fuel efficiency and environmental performance during steady driving without compromising engine response and the linear feeling of a naturally aspirated engine.

Lightweight Highly Rigid Body

In order to create a stiff frame capable of handling repeated cornering at high limits, large cross section rockers, a highly rigid front brace and rear partition brace using aluminum die-cast brackets have been equipped. Structural adhesive added to the adjoining panels that enhances rigidity and damping characteristics, fine pitch laser screw welding that prevents cross-sectional deformation, and high rigidity glass adhesive that increases cohesion between the glass and body were all incorporated into the chassis. The use of aluminum, high tensile steel, and hot stamp materials allow for a lightweight, yet highly rigid structure. A strong sense of confidence from the chassis allows for more aggressive driving when attacking in the corners.

RC F Exclusive Tuned Suspension

The suspension geometry has been improved with newly engineered parts making high suspension rigidity and optimized roll rigidity a reality. The steering system also offers better response. Tuning and long-distance endurance testing were performed at tracks all around the world.

* Vehicle speed, braking force and surrounding conditions (such as temperature or humidity) may cause brake noise or cause the brake pads to stick due to rust.

Aerodynamics

Aero parts that achieve high driving stability and minimize power loss due to wind resistance are an important factor for sports cars. In addition to side air outlets, the RC F uses aerodynamic features near the rear wheels and side corners of the rear bumper. An automatically-retractable active rear wing* increases downforce. The entire body controls airflow through the use of aero stabilizing fins and under covers to produce highly stable handling.
* Rises at 80 km/h (approx. 130 km/h in ECO mode) and automatically lowers under 40 km/h. Manual operation is also possible.
